For lovers of all things rural, of steam, the countryside, are curious to see how it was done in 'granfers day', or just after a great day out, Great Dorset is the place to go.

Every year the dusk line up of showman's engines is something special. Fowler, Burrell to Garrett and Foster. The melodic whirring of the dynamo flywheels, the hiss of steam, the hoot hoot of the whistles, the steam and smoke hanging low in the air of a balmy late summers evening. Ride a steam powered gallopers, maybe the steam yachts, the big wheel or the cakewalk? Or the delight of the modern amusement rides?

If ground conditions permit don't miss the comings and going in the Heavy Haulage Area, maybe 3 steam cranes and numerous road locomotives climbing haulage hill smoke belching out of their stacks. Even more evocative at night when the red sparks from the chimneys can clearly be seen.

Maybe see the Penny Rigden Dancing Girls perform an Open Air Can Can, listen to a 118 Key Gavioli Scenic Organ, or 89 key Marenghi, join in with the Old Plonkers Orchestra, or Dr Busker and the Real Ale Choir? Lots of other entertainment too in one of the several beer tents, from the Main Marquee, to the Folk Stage.

Watch spar or hurdle making? Want to see a reed comber, threshing machine, a stationary baler, or a rack saw bench. In the Heavy Horse Arena's; haymaking to ploughing. Then see you at this years Great Dorset.

I will be there will you?

Now held on a 500 acre site at Tarrant Hinton 3 miles north of Blandford Forum in Dorset, but for many years held at Stourpaine Bushes also in Dorset.

The fair is held from Wednesday to Sunday following August Bank Holiday Monday. Expect a queue to get in, and to get dusty shoes, or if wet and muddy, conditions to slippery underfoot. So take care. But thatís part of the fun.
